GLMCA Scholarship Program

At its inception, the GLMCA established a scholarship program to assist promising students of music at the college level who show interest in the promotion and performance of male chorus music and possess an appreciation of personal, fraternal, and artistic harmony.

The top award in the program each year, the Guy Stoppert Scholarship, is made available through the contribution of Guy Stoppert, a member of the Norton Male Chorus of Flint, Michigan.

Other award values are subject to change as determined by the scholarship committee, based on funds available.

Scholarships are available to full-time students enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree program with a major in music (vocal or choral emphasis receives a preference). Candidates must be sponsored by a member chorus of the Great Lakes Male Chorus Association.

This Year's Recipient

This year's recipient is Alina Tamborini who was sponsored by the Lansing Men of Orpheus.

Alina TamboriniAlina Tamborini is currently a junior studying music at Michigan State University. For her first two and a half years at MSU, she was double majoring in Oboe Performance and Music Education with a vocal focus. Soon after the beginning of her junior year, she decided to focus on vocal music education with hopes to become a collegiate choral conductor. It is her plan to teach in the public schools, as it has always been a goal of hers to be a teacher. From that point, she plans on going back to school to get her masters and DMA in choral conducting.

MSU has allowed Alina to explore a number of musical outlets. On the vocal side, she was a part of State Singers and Chorale as well as a member of Women’s Chamber Ensemble, a selectwomen’s chorus. She also auditioned for roles in the Opera Program. She was in the chorus of Mozart’s Magic Flute and Pucchini’s La Boheme. She portrayed the role of Despina in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte. This past semester, she played the role of Romilda in Handel’s Xerxes. Through her time at MSU she has been in numerous graduate conducting recitals and composition recitals performing premieres of 21st century music which have extended her repertoire of new vocal techniques. In February, she attended the American Choral Director Association’s national convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. While there, she attended numerous interest sessions, concerts, and workshops, all of which were beneficial as a music educator.

Since starting MSU, Alina has been involved in the bands. She started in Concert Band her first semester and was then in Symphony Band for the proceeding semesters. She has been an oboe soloist for State Singers as well as for many church performances. In addition to solo and large ensemble involvement, she has been a part of many chamber groups. With these groups, Alina played in recitals and has done multiple outreach programs to K-12 schools, performing for the music classrooms and then describing the instruments and how important it is to be a part of chamber music. Though Alina has recently dropped oboe as a major, she continues to play for student recitals and for the Mason Symphony Orchestra.

The accomplishment Alina most proud of is directing Plymouth Congregational’s Youth Choir. Alina has been the youth choir director for the past two and a half years. Her responsibilities include conducting weekly rehearsals, Special Service events, and performances throughout the year with the Youth Choir, as well as Vacation Bible School in the summer. Being the youth choir director has provided Alina with a very unique and rewarding first experience in teaching. Many of the children come from challenging family backgrounds or have learning disabilities. The students are not the only ones who have benefited from this choir. Every week she continues to learn from them through her interactions with them. Alina would like to thank the GLMCA for their consideration and their very generous scholarship. She looks forward to singing with the Men of Orpheus again. These men, as well as all of the ensembles in the GLMCA, are an inspiration as they have kept music in their life!
